I think it's so interesting that every different Rising sign has houses where planets are in their domicile, exaltation, exile and depression.
Cancer Risings and Sagittarius Risings experience Venus in its exile through their 5H (Venus in Scorpio, Venus in Aries) while Taurus Risings experience Venus in its depression in their 5H (Venus in Virgo).
Virgo Risings and Sagittarius Rising experience Jupiter in its exile in their 10H (Jupiter in Gemini, Jupiter in Virgo) while Aries Risings experience Jupiter in its depression (Jupiter in Capricorn) through the 10H.
And on the other expression, it is Scorpio Risings that experience Venus in its throne through the 5H (Venus in Pisces) while Gemini Risings and Capricorn Risings experience Venus in its domicile (Venus in Libra, Venus in Taurus) through their 5H.
And for more examples, it is Gemini Risings and Virgo Risings that experience Mercury in its domicile (Virgo is the domicile and crown of Mercury) through their 1H.
Capricorn Risings will experience Saturn in its depression (Saturn in Aries) through their 4H and Libra Risings will experience Saturn in its throne through their 1H.
Essential dignity makes me look at profections through a brand new lens because a sign will be activated. For a Scorpio Rising with Pisces as their sign of the year, a Jupiter in Pisces transit through their 5H will be very important to them than others.
Likewise with Taurus Rising with Aries as their sign of the year, Mars in Capricorn transiting their 9H will be much more poignant for them than any other Taurus Rising with a different sign activation.
An ingress into a planet's domicile or even out of its depression will be SO loud.
[I also stand by the belief that neither Sun or Moon can be timelords because they are Luminaries, but their signs can and will be activated.]

mars and anger: 💢
Tumblr media
mars is the planet of frustration, conflict, and energy. though mars isn’t just about anger and how we express it, it’s also how we control our anger !! i originally talked about this concept in a tweet last september
looking at the essential dignity of mars, you can get a lot of insight on how mars operates in the signs + how that affects our anger management skills:
mars in aries and scorpio:
these two signs are ruled by mars, also referred to as his domicile signs. aries is the sign of clarity, so aries marses are quite discerning of what requires their anger. they don’t like wasting energy on pointless things
with scorpio marses, they’re extremely calculating and deliberate with the ways they express their anger — this quality can be seen in mars as he is often depicted as a war strategist. scorpio marses don’t like entering fights they know they can’t win
mars in capricorn:
here is where mars is exalted, meaning that he has ease getting his job done in capricorn. this is the sign of restraint and utility, so capricorn marses tend to have very controlled anger + they like applying it purposefully
mars in taurus and libra:
these two signs are where mars is debilitated, also referred to as his detriment signs. with taurus marses, we often hold grudges over situations regardless of how severe it actually is. “stubborn like a bull” as the saying goes
with libra marses, they can experience difficulty in getting their frustration across because libra has much to do with diplomacy and tact. libra governs balance, so it can be hard for them to purely express their own interests
mars in cancer:
here is where mars is fallen, meaning that he struggles to achieve his goals in this sign. cancer is the sign of emotions and moods, so cancer marses can struggle with taking conflict personally + being snappy with others
my linktree
book a reading !!

When I saw this scene and his description of filming it, I immediately thought of Luke's fallen Mars (♂) in Cancer (♋) in the 12th house.
(More here about where I got his birth data.)
At its most basic, a fallen planet is just not resourced to do its job the way it would most like to. Folks often don't like to hear that they have planets in detriment or fall because it can point to a struggle.
But something depressed planets can reflect is an ability to figure out other (often unconventional or inventive) ways to get the job done.
Peep that tear doing some incredible heavy lifting to beautiful effect.

To me, Machete kind of has the energy of a secondary villain/coldhearted side character in someone else's story that a lot of fans latch onto, moreso than the protagonist. Question is, would he be the villain in anyone's story?
Why, thank you! I'm actually glad to hear he gives off that vibe. I don't think he set out to become a villain but a lot of people certainly view him as one.
#in the 16th century canon he starts out as an introverted but sincerely well meaning guy that never quite manages to find his social niche#he was a sensitive kid and when subjected to enough pressure#his insecurity fearfulness and powerlessness mutate into distrust resentment aggression suffocating repression and self-restraint#I don't think he's a bad person in fact he consistently tries very hard to do the right thing#do his job properly avoid letting people down and get through life with a sense of dignity#but he is supposed to come across kind of cold impersonable and difficult to be around if you don't know him personally (and very few do)#people can sense there's something wrong with him and are put off by it#Vatican is a nest of vipers and as the stakes rise he retreats deeper into his coldblooded untouchable work persona#he has no choice but to start lying scheming blackmailing and eliminating his enemies#in order to maintain his position keep Vasco safe their relationship under wraps and his own head above water#essentially playing by the same rules everyone else in the holy see has been playing with for centuries#eventually he loses his spot as the secretary of state and is manipulated/forced to take on a role in the roman inquisition#and if people were sort of iffy about him before being the authority overseeing trials torture excommunications and executions doesn't help#and since he has so few allies and such an infamous reputation he's an easy target for scapegoating whenever necessary#towards the end it dawns on him that he's become the kind of twisted cruel corrupt person he used to fear and despise#and the guilt moral injury and abject self-loathing had largely sapped him of his will to live by the time the final assassin gets him#answered#anonymous#Machete#Vaschete lore#he thought his dream of priesthood would make him a better person more worthy of admiration safety and love but he climbed too high#and got roped up in the dangerous games that take place under god's nose and slowly got strangled to death

ASTRO BASICS #4: UNDERSTANDING DOMICILE, EXALTED, DETRIMENT AND FALL PLACEMENTS (ESSENTIAL DIGNITIES)
personal planets version
THE ESSENTIAL DIGNITIES:
domicile: the planet is in it's home sign (comfortable)
exaltation: the planet is elevated (comfortable)
detriment: the planet is opposite to the home sign (uncomfortable)
fall: the planet is opposite to the exalted sign (uncomfortable)
when a planet is in domicile or exaltation it means the planet is comfortable in the sign it is in. this results in:
the placement becoming powerful (strong)
the placement being "too much" (overabundance of the planet's energy)
when a planet is in detriment or fall it means the planet is uncomfortable in the sign it is in. this results in:
the placement becoming weak and poorly expressed
the placement becoming "embarrassed" with how to behave or express itself (leads to coping)
BRIEF EXPLANATIONS ON THE PERSONAL PLANETS:
☉ SUN - IDENTITY:
domicile in leo, exalted in aries
♡ why it's powerful: confident and focused on the self as the sun wants to be.
♡ why it's too much: self-absorbed and places themselves at the centre of attention and situations (without the consideration of others).
detriment in aquarius, fall in libra
♡ why it's weak - aquarius: focused on society, ideals and groups (other people) and not the self and only knows who they are in relation to (their knowledge on) these things (which is other people). feels left out - alienated or isolated, black sheep.
♡ why it's weak - libra: insecure and focused on other people and seeks approval from others to validate identity. self-unaware and only knows who they are in relation to other people (who they're around or who they idealise).
☽ MOON - EMOTIONS, COMFORT, SUBCONSCIOUS:
domicile in cancer, exalted in taurus
♡ why it's powerful: secure, unfiltered emotional expression. easily defined emotions which can be translated effectively - "predictable" and expected emotions. treats (takes care of and spoils) themselves easily. naturally trusting.
♡ why it's too much: overindulgent in order to seek comfort, doesn't easily understand different emotional expressions, ruled by their emotional life (moody to the outside world). naive and too easily emotionally attached.
detriment in capricorn, fall in scorpio
♡ why it's weak: hard relationship with the mother, insecure and restricted emotional expression. secretive and suspicious. afraid of allowing themselves to seek out comfort. doesn't form close connections easily.
☿ MERCURY - THINKING, COMMUNICATION:
domicile in gemini (extroverted expression) and virgo (introverted expression), exalted in aquarius
♡ why it's powerful: quick thinkers and active communicators. • gemini: easily communicates with all people • virgo: highly effective planners and clever strategists • aquarius: lightning bolt epiphanies, understands different forms of information easily.
♡ why it's too much - gemini (extroverted expression): talks too much and too quickly (misses words, tells stories in the wrong order, lies etc.). says the wrong thing, can't be silent (offends and overshares).
♡ why it's too much - virgo (introverted expression): too practical (overly focused on plans and details), nagging, particular, pedantic.
♡ why it's too much - aquarius: easily defined by their knowledge - god complex.
detriment in sagittarius and pisces, fall in leo
♡ why it's weak - sagittarius: meaning over facts (and turns personal experiences into facts), unable to explain themselves effectively and tells stories in a confusing way.
♡ why it's weak - pisces: says one thing but means another, naive communicators (can be easily lied to), logic easily swayed by emotions.
♡ why it's weak - leo: one-way communicators, doesn't understand what others are saying easily, dramatic and ineffective storytelling.
♀︎ VENUS - LOVE, CONNECTION, MATERIAL:
domicile in libra (extroverted expression) and taurus (introverted expression), exalted in pisces.
♡ why it's powerful - libra (extroverted expression): connects easily with others, easily understands others' needs and wants, sharing and fair to others.
♡ why it's powerful - taurus (introverted expression): understands security and earthly matters, understanding of and appreciation for beauty and aesthetics, naturally sensual.
♡ why it's powerful - pisces: easily able to connect and empathise with others, flexible and adaptable to the lives of others, sharing and giving.
♡ why it's too much: lacks independence (needs possessions or other people) • libra: people pleasers, overly focused on romance • taurus: hedonistic and hoarding (possessive) • pisces: easily loses themselves in others.
detriment in aries and scorpio, fall in virgo
♡ why it's weak: self-concerned, can't easily open up to others and share. • aries: too selfish for give and take with others • scorpio: love has conditions (can't naturally give of themselves) • virgo: too critical of other people, perfectionistic and unaccepting.
♂MARS - HOW WE GO AFTER WHAT WE WANT, INITIATIVE, INDEPENDENCE:
domicile in aries and scorpio, exalted in capricorn
♡ why it's powerful: go after what they want straightforwardly, stands up for themselves, good energy and not lethargic about their goals.
♡ why it's too much: selfish and goes after what they want at the expense of others. • aries: blunt and inconsiderate (their rights over your rights) • scorpio: easily jealous of others and revenge-seeking (wants to tear others down, their rights over your rights) • capricorn: ruthless. can be extremely malicious and cruel, doesn't care who they hurt to achieve their goals even more so than aries and scorpio.
detriment in libra and taurus, fall in cancer
♡ why it's weak: procrastinating, lazy and can't stand up for themselves (sometimes needs others to stand up for them or needs others to help them do things - doesn't want to do things alone) • libra: stands up for others and causes but not themselves, feels the need to manipulate others to get their way, passive • taurus: inappropriate anger (anger simmers for long periods - is patient until they explode, creates unclear boundaries with others), passive about going after what they want • cancer: can't stand up for themselves and throws tantrums instead, argues too emotionally.

Absolutely the funniest thing about my current corner of tumblr is that pretty much everyone I've recently followed for Apollo-Appreciating Purposes are either genuinely Hellenist or just rather very into Rick Riordan's Trials of Apollo series which is wild because I know a net zero about both of those things.
#I've never been interested in Riordan's work and the Percy Jackson books I did read as a young lad didn't change my mind on that topic#Growing up I preferred a very one or the other method for my greek adaptational content#which essentially means either you're a play or an adaptation of a legit story or myth with recogniseable figures and plotpoints#or you're an original story with mythical elements but the myths and the adaptations and interpretations of those myths is secondary#Percy Jackson did both and it was very disorienting for me because the books were well grounded enough that when I came into contact#with some element I didn't recognise or couldn't remember I myself would get confused and go “Is that true? like really?? :0c”#Then I ran a library book club and Percy Jackson books were p much all the kids wanted to read#but they rejected all of my supplementary greek myth exercises and got a lot of stuff mixed around#because percy jackson does a rather good job of making a convincing argument that it knows its stuff and people will quicker cite that#than do readings of the much more difficult older texts and translations of text#It's not Percy Jackson's fault it's just a bad experience that stuck with me and by extension leaked over into Trials of Apollo when that#was released#Trials of Apollo was crazy because I generally make it my business to consume any and all greek myth interpretational media that bothers#to include Apollo (there is a shockingly low amount of things that do that)#however a LOT of novels especially never let Apollo retain the dignity of a god in their portrayals of him#and have him resemble a teenager more than anything even remotely close to an adult#I had just gotten finished reading a novel adaptation of the story of Coronis and Apollo with this same issue#so when I opened the first volume of ToA and saw that Apollo simply genuinely WAS a teenager#Frankly I just closed the book and put it back on the bookstore shelf and very calmly walked away LMFAO#I have nothing to say about Hellenists and neo hellenists y'all seem like wonderful people and I hope#you have a lovely time with your e-offerings and worship#unless you are my single personal friend with Apollo as your patron#then I wish you 1000 woes and 10000 divine brain blasts#toa#pjo#ginger rambles

having debilitated/challenging placements ≠ being doomed.
An infuriating trend I’ve noticed over the years (and that still prevails) among psychology-centric astrology circles is to describe challenging placements (detriment/fall/charts containing many harsh aspects/8H or 12H placements) in a manner that has people immediately assuming they are doomed or destined for failure. And not only is that unethical, it’s also a huge misconception that fails to get across the fact that nothing is actually that simple in astrology or in general, which causes people to misinterpret the workings of said planets.
While it is true that in traditional astrology, there are placements that are objectively positive and others that are less favorable, it simply means that the planet is not supported in doing what it wants/likes to do & carrying out its agenda. There is nothing inherently wrong with the debilitated planet, only that the environment (Zodiac Sign) is actively working against it (Detriment/Fall).
Remember, your chart isn’t just you, much less present-time you alone. Your chart is the map of your entire life — and consequently, those challenging placements reflect situations & circumstances that may or may not be negative in nature. Debilitated planets do not exist to “curse” you — rather, to validate your life experiences. They provide explanations for hardships you might have (or will, later on) experienced such as a difficult childhood, betrayals by friends & loved ones, accidents, feeling isolated in your own community, etcetera.
It also cannot be overstated that oftentimes, debilitated planets function better under hardship than dignified ones since that is more or less their natural state.
For example, Sun & Mars debilitated can indicate challenges with confidence, initiative, drive, decision-making, capacity to act with authority, taking action and power struggles with paternal (sun)/masculine (both) figures in your life.
Venus debilitated can signify challenges with your perception & processing of love (not just the romantic kind), feeling worthy of said love, displaying affection, active fault-seeking and overanalyzing (in Virgo's case) and struggles with, avoidance of or overindulgence in physical pleasure.
Jupiter debilitated is all about challenges with faith, trust, community even. Debilitated Jupiter natives tend to defy the norm/status-quo in some way.
Saturn debilitated can indicate struggles with establishing and keeping boundaries, stability, patience, visibility, the very notion of time, needing to try things for oneself instead of listening to advice, making the same mistakes more than once, and other such things.
Mercury being debilitated can show issues with communication, anything that necessitates directness and brevity, things getting lost in translation, possibly issues handling money, not having your ideas taken seriously, having a hard time working with details, and being misunderstood.
A debilitated Moon shows issues with caring for the self, feeling cared for, emotion regulation & management of feelings, nourishment, rest, the physical body and possible struggles with feminine/maternal figures.
Do you have any debilitated placements? If you’re not sure, find my post on essential dignities here.

i think my biggest gripe with right vs leftwing politics is that so much of it, on both sides, boils down to people arguing about who is deserving of basic dignity and who isnt. the left is as guilty of doing this as the right, but because the left lacks substantial political power it doesn't actually translate into policy and is deemed as more harmless because it only becomes systemic on a popular level. but both left and right wing people are guilty of writing off certain groups or individuals as simply undeserving of dignity because they transgress certain standards of moral rightness defined by said group as applicable to all people universally. and both groups are guilty of thinking they're exempt from authoritarianism because "they" are correct and those who oppose them are not, and in their opposition must be stripped of their essential right to dignity.
the capacity for totalitarianism isn't defined by political leaning, its simply a human trait. the more time we spend debating who deserves dignity and who doesnt the less time we spend actually affecting substantive change. debating the right to dignity is exactly with corrupt authorities want people to do, because such debate is inherently self-focused, a self-defence of one's own "right" views as opposed to the base "other," as opposed to a concentrated effort to win and maintain those rights to dignity for all members of the group as human regardless of individual transgression.

sagittarius venus and jupiter appreciation post
sagittarius jupiter and venus are devotional as hell. devotion is about keeping your faith at a steady pace in moments of desperation. it’s about perservering without any obligation to.
sagittarius’s 4H is in its domicile there. it can devote for reasons that feel obvious for them. some can be heavy on worshipping their ancestors. the 6H is venus ruled, meaning, it keeps consistency with its principles. it does not backtrack into immorality when it is cornered. it is in its detriment in the 10th; others find these folks provocative because they are very trial and error (sometimes at the downfall of others). others also do not see or respect their devotion because of this.
Sagittarius in general are all or nothing. its only essential dignities are a domicile and a detriment, no exaltations or falls. their detriment is MERCURY. they cannot think through decisions for their life. in fact, i don’t think they should. their domicile in jupiter endows them with excellent intuition and luck. thank god sagittarius is mutable, right? there are no saturnian angles for the mutable signs; sagittarius feels less repercussions if they do fuck up. sagittarius is always working towards a bigger picture (much like jupiter) even if they realize it or not (this is more applicable to venus). no saturnian angles also gives them that “no obligation to anything ever” attitude
sag jupiter is described above to a T. sag venus, however, gets lost very easy. they are a peregrine venus. they need to look within themselves and love it, but they may have a harder time doing so. their life journey feels much more pointless than a sag jupiter would say for themselves. sag venus must remember that their 4H is exalted by venus.
sag venus, you must love where you come from and who you are on top of loving someone else. you must PREFER your own company. you must understand that you have the choice to build your own roots with the power of your 4H. you do not have to lean into your 10H and give a single fuck if people want to tell you or each other if you belong here or not

I want to say that Saturn exalts in Libra because it helps with a lot of negative connections and likewise with Mars in Capricorn, but somehow, I don't feel like that's the case.
Even though planets in their domicile seem to edge out exalted planets by power, I think it's that exact idea of power I get stuck on. Perhaps planets in their detriment are powerless and tend to misbehave based upon not being able to fulfill their significations, like a gun misfiring. And at the other end, exalted planets have too much power that must be carefully channeled.
I'm toying with this idea of essential dignity:
Planets in their domicile: Perfect place, perfect time
Planets in their exaltation: Right place, right time
Planets in their depression or fall: Wrong place, wrong time
Planets in their exile or detriment: Worst place, worst time

Astrology 101 - Essential Dignities 🪐
Tumblr media
In astrology, dignities refer to the strength or influence a planet has based on its position in the zodiac. These dignities help determine how well a planet can express its energy in a given sign. The main types of dignities are Rulership (or Domicile), Exaltation, Detriment, and Fall. Here's a breakdown of each of one:
1. Rulership (Domicile)
A planet is in its rulership when it is in the sign it governs. This gives the planet strong and harmonious energy, allowing it to express itself naturally and with full power.
Example: Venus rules Taurus and Libra, so Venus is in rulership in these signs.
Meaning: The planet’s energy is expressed positively and comfortably, indicating ease in manifesting its qualities.
2. Exaltation
When a planet is in its exaltation, it is in a sign where its energy is particularly potent and well-supported, but not quite as natural as rulership.
Example: The Sun is exalted in Aries, giving it a strong, dynamic expression in this sign.
Meaning: The planet’s energy is uplifted and works efficiently, often symbolizing a place where its qualities shine brightest.
3. Detriment
A planet is in detriment when it is in the sign opposite its rulership. This weakens the planet, making it harder for it to express its energy effectively.
Example: Mars rules Aries, but is in detriment in Libra, the opposite sign.
Meaning: The planet’s energy is challenged or obstructed, leading to difficulty in manifesting its natural qualities.
4. Fall
A planet is in fall when it is in the sign opposite its exaltation. This represents the planet’s energy at its lowest point, where it struggles to function properly.
Example: The Moon is exalted in Taurus, so it is in fall in Scorpio.
Meaning: The planet’s energy feels out of place, leading to challenges or weaknesses in expressing its influence.
Key Associations:
Rulership: Natural, strong, positive.
Exaltation: Enhanced, strong, special.
Detriment: Weakened, challenging.
Fall: Discomfort, difficulty, struggle.
Together, these dignities help astrologers understand how a planet behaves in a particular sign, whether its influence is strengthened, neutral, or weakened.
Tumblr media
Essential Dignities & Aspects:
Here’s how you can further connect dignities and aspects in astrology based on degrees, giving you more insight into how planets function in different positions.
1. Rulership (Domicile) and Conjunction:
Connection: A planet in rulership is like being in conjunction with the energy of its own sign. In a conjunction, the planet’s qualities are amplified, and similarly, a planet in rulership expresses its energy harmoniously and powerfully. It’s at home and aligned, like two energies coming together as one.
Example: Venus in Taurus or Libra functions smoothly, similar to how a conjunction enhances planets’ strengths.
2. Exaltation and Trine:
Connection: A planet in exaltation can be compared to the flow of a trine aspect (120°), where energy moves with ease and grace. The planet's qualities shine, though not as naturally as in rulership, but still with high potential. Just like trines bring harmony and effortless expression, exaltation allows the planet to thrive and express its highest qualities.
Example: The Sun in Aries is exalted and feels dynamic, similar to how planets in trine work smoothly together.
3. Detriment and Opposition:
Connection: A planet in detriment (opposite its rulership) is like being in a constant opposition (180°), where energies are in tension. The planet is in a foreign environment, opposite to what feels natural, and has to adapt, much like how an opposition aspect challenges balance between two forces.
Example: Mars in Libra (detriment) struggles to assert its natural aggressive energy, similar to how opposing forces create tension that must be reconciled.
4. Fall and Square:
Connection: A planet in fall feels like it’s constantly in a square (90°) to its rulership, dealing with conflict and obstruction. The square aspect forces challenge and growth through friction, just like fall signifies a planet operating at its weakest, with difficulties in expressing its true nature.
Example: The Moon in Scorpio (fall) has a tough time expressing its nurturing qualities, similar to how squares demand resolution of tension between incompatible energies.
5. Mutual Reception and Sextile:
Connection: When two planets are in mutual reception (each in the other's rulership), it's similar to a sextile (60°), where planets cooperate and support each other. The planet's strength is boosted because even though it’s not in its own sign, it receives help from the other planet, just as sextiles create opportunity and cooperation between planetary energies.
Example: Venus in Aries and Mars in Taurus are in mutual reception (each other's ruling signs), which feels like the beneficial energy exchange of a sextile.
Additional Connections:
Retrograde and Dignities: Planets in retrograde sometimes mimic the challenge of detriment or fall, where their energy feels slowed or reversed. While this isn’t directly an aspect, it parallels the difficulty a planet might have in expressing itself smoothly when in a weakened dignity.
Using these comparisons, you can look at dignities and aspects side by side, deepening your understanding of planetary behavior in different contexts. This method blends your knowledge of both systems for a clearer astrological interpretation!
